sweeteners

Sweeteners are natural or synthetic substances which are used to sweeten products instead of sugar. They are much sweeter than sugar but contain little or no energy and nutritional value. Sweeteners are largely used in diet foods and calorie-reduced foods. Maximum levels are governed by regulations and they must be declared as food additives on labeling.

The use of sweeteners is controversial. Although they contain no calories and are suitable for diabetics, it is often alleged that they increase appetite. This may be because the use of sweeteners increases a taste for sweet foods or because sweeteners function as flavor enhancers. Artificial sweeteners should not be confused with natural sugar substitutes .
