sugar
Sugar is a carbohydrate. We divide sugars into 3 groups:
- monosaccharides, e.g. fructose and glucose
- disaccharides, e.g. sucrose, maltose and lactose
- polysaccharides, e.g. starch
Industrial household sugar is sucrose and is produced from sugar cane or sugar beet. Excessive sugar consumption is unhealthy and can lead to overweight and associated illness. Sugar also plays a role in tooth decay.
