purine reduced diet

Purine is a natural substance which is produced by the body and also contained in foods. During the breakdown of purine in the body, uric acid is produced. Sufferers of gout have a high level of uric acid in the blood. Therapy prescribes reduction of uric acid levels through a purine reduced diet whereby daily purine intake should not exceed 500mg. Purine-rich foods such as meat, fish and pulses must be avoided and alcohol consumption reduced. Diet should be oriented on ovo-lacto vegetarian nutrition with milk products and eggs, liberal quantities of fruit and low-purine vegetables.
