obesity

An excess of body fat: overweight is classified as obesity when BMI exceeds 30, as it is around this point that it is associated with certain health risks  (e.g. cardiovascular disease, metabolic dysfunction, orthopedic problems) and thereby reduces life expectancy.
Causes:

  • genetic factors
  • calorific imbalance due to overeating and a sedentary lifestyle (calorie intake higher than calorie requirements)
  • psychological aspects

Therapy to combat obesity involves a long-term change in eating habits and lifestyle. In extreme cases, medical or surgical therapy is possible.
