natural sugar substitutes

Natural sugar substitutes are sweet-tasting carbohydrates which have a lesser effect on blood sugar than sucrose. They are therefore used in diets for diabetics and also in chewing gum, toothpaste etc. as they do not cause tooth decay. They are produced from fruits and vegetables and, in contrast to artificial sweeteners, are generally uncontroversial although higher amounts ( more than 30g/ day) of sugar alcohols may have a laxative effect because they are absorbed in the digestion system slowly and may bind the water there. Common sugar substitutes include xylitol, sorbitol, mannitol and fructose.
