minerals

Minerals are inorganic nutrients which the body cannot produce itself and which therefore must be ingested in food. They play an important role in the body including the growth of body tissues (e.g. bones, cells) and regulation of metabolism.
We differentiate between:

  • major elements: more than 50 mg per kg body weight (e.g. calcium, magnesium, sodium, phosphorus)
  • trace elements: less than 50 mg per kg body weight (e.g. iron fluorine, iodine, zinc).
