malnutrition

Malnutrition occurs when the intake of nutrients is less than requirements.
We differentiate between:

  • quantitative malnutrition: energy requirements are not fulfilled due to insufficient food intake
  • qualitative malnutrition: due to an unbalanced diet resulting in a deficiency of certain nutrients

The results of a deficiency in energy or nutrient intake include weight loss, susceptibility to infection, and organ dysfunction. To correct malnutrition, therapy which adapts the diet to individual needs is necessary.
