Joule (J) is a unit of energy measurement and is generally given as Kilojoules (kJ). It indicates the energy content of  foods. Energy is necessary for all bodily functions e.g. muscle movement, maintenance of cells, digestion, heart function and breathing. Joules have replaced the old unit of calories (cal)
(1 kJ = 0.24 kcal).
