genetically engineered foods

Single (sometimes unrelated) genes which carry known characteristics are transferred into organisms/ plants in order to produce the required characteristics in a product. The objective may be, for example to secure or increase production or to improve the quality of foods. Genetically engineered foods must be inspected for safety before being introduced to the market, in order to exclude any risk to health. Products which contain genetically engineered organisms must be labeled.
