diabetes mellitus

Chronic metabolic dysfunction which causes increased blood sugar levels. The body produces too little, or no insulin, a hormone which regulates blood sugar. The disease must be treated to avoid subsequent damage (e.g. heart attack, stroke). Doctors differentiate between two types of diabetes:

  • Type 1 diabetes: influenced by hereditary factors. Must be treated with insulin injection.
  • Type 2 diabetes: among other causes are unhealthy nutrition and overweight

It is initially treated with diet adjustment (reduction of fat and carbohydrates) and physical exercise to reduce weight. Advanced states are treated with medicine and insulin
