Patients with dementia often show a tendency to eat less but, through agitation and restlessness, have higher energy requirements.
In order to avoid malnutrition (a BMI < 20 for the aged) and dehydration, an adapted, balanced diet and sufficient liquid is necessary. Food should be well seasoned (possibly including flavor enhancer), high-energy and high-fat and look appetizing and fresh.

Further options are:

  • finger food (no cutlery is necessary and independence is encouraged)
  • placing food at the side of the regular routes along which patients walk
  • night cafés (takes the changed sleeping-waking rhythm into consideration)
